FCC reduces prison phone costs from $14/minute

Starting in 2016, costs for calls to and from prison inmates will be capped at $0.11/minute. They currently can reach as much as $14 per minute, used as a profit center for phone companies and prisons.

The new FCC rules discourage kickbacks that phone companies pay prisons to win the phone service contracts.

Calls will still be monitored as before.
